What Are Collagen Injections?

Collagen injections are a skin renewal treatment in which active ingredients are injected into the skin to support its own collagen production. They are also known as “youth injections.” The aim is not to add volume, but to help the skin look healthier, firmer and more rested.

Collagen keeps the skin firm and elastic, and its production naturally slows from around age 25. Sun exposure, smoking, stress and a poor diet speed up this decline. Over time, the skin thins, loses elasticity and fine lines become more visible.

The products used fall into two main groups:

  • Collagen-based injections: Nithya, which we use at our clinic in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, is made of type 1 collagen microparticles. The collagen stimulates cells called fibroblasts, which supports the skin’s own collagen production.
  • Hyaluronic acid and amino acid injections: These hydrate the skin deeply and provide the building blocks needed to make collagen. They are sometimes called “smart fillers.”

Which product suits you is decided at your consultation, based on your skin’s structure and needs. Collagen injections may suit women and men whose skin is starting to thin, look dull or lose elasticity, and who want a natural refresh rather than a dramatic change.

What Do Collagen Injections Do?

Collagen injections focus on improving skin quality rather than adding volume. They may be used for:

  • Signs of aging: Helping soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Loss of elasticity: Supporting density and firmness in thin, lax skin.
  • Skin repair: Helping reduce the look of acne scars and other scars.
  • Neck, décolleté and hands: Treating thin, worn skin as part of neck, décolleté and hand treatments.
  • Body areas: Supporting firmness on the abdomen, buttocks, upper arms and legs, and as part of stretch mark treatment.

Collagen injections do not remove deep wrinkles or significant volume loss on their own. For volume concerns such as hollow cheeks, facial filler is a better fit, and both can be used in the same plan. Within Facial Architecture (Yüz Mimarisi®), collagen injections are a step that supports skin quality alongside treatments that preserve the proportions of the face, so the face’s structure and the skin’s texture are addressed together.

How Are Collagen Injections Done?

Treatment begins with a skin assessment. Your skin’s hydration, elasticity and signs of aging are evaluated, and the product and injection points are chosen accordingly. Ask your doctor about pausing medications that increase bleeding, such as aspirin, for a few days beforehand to lower the risk of bruising.

  1. The skin is cleansed and any makeup is removed.
  2. A numbing cream is applied and left to take effect.
  3. The product is injected into the middle layer of the skin in small doses with very fine needles.
  4. The area is cleaned and, if needed, a soothing product is applied.

The session takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on the size of the area. Small bumps at the injection points usually disappear within a few hours, and most people return to their day straight afterward.

Collagen injections can be planned alongside facial mesotherapy, Botox and fillers. They are not done in the same session as laser treatments or after a deep chemical peel.

How Many Sessions Do You Need and How Long Do Results Last?

Collagen injections are usually planned as a course. For collagen-based products, three sessions two weeks apart are most often preferred, though the number may vary with your skin and the product used.

First changes are usually noticed within 7–14 days and continue to develop during the course. Improvements in density and elasticity tend to become clearer in the weeks after the course is complete.

The skin keeps aging, so the effect is not lasting for good. With collagen-based products, results are generally considered to hold for 12–18 months, varying with age, skin type and lifestyle. Maintenance sessions may be planned at intervals.

  • Age and skin type: As collagen loss progresses, more frequent sessions may be needed.
  • Sun: Unprotected sun exposure speeds up collagen breakdown.
  • Smoking and diet: Both reduce the skin’s ability to renew itself.

Collagen Injection Side Effects and Aftercare

Collagen injections should be done by a doctor with licensed products. As with any injection, some temporary side effects may occur:

  • Redness and small bumps: Seen at the injection points, usually settling within a few hours.
  • Bruising: Small bruises may appear, especially where skin is thin, and fade within a few days.
  • Tenderness: The area may feel slightly tender for a short time.

For the first day, avoid touching the area and stay away from saunas, Turkish baths and intense exercise. Afterward, daily sunscreen helps protect your results. Infection and allergic reactions are rare. If you notice increasing pain, marked swelling or fever, contact your doctor without delay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Popular Questions

Do collagen injections hurt?

Because very fine needles are used and a numbing cream is applied first, most people feel only a mild sting. This can vary with your pain threshold and the area treated.

Filler adds volume to a specific area or fills deep lines. Collagen injections do not add volume; they focus on improving the skin’s hydration, density and elasticity.

They may be used from the late 20s or early 30s, when collagen loss begins, as a preventive step. At older ages, they are planned with other treatments to support skin quality. Whether they suit you is decided at your consultation.

Avoid makeup for the first 12–24 hours so the injection points can close. After that, you can wear makeup as usual. Using clean brushes and sponges in the first days helps lower the risk of infection.

They are not done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with immune system disorders, diabetes or a tendency to keloid scarring, if there is an infection in the area, or during cancer treatment. Tell your doctor if you have any history of allergy to the ingredients.
