What Is Lip Filler?

Lip filler is a non-surgical injectable treatment that uses hyaluronic acid gel to add volume, define the lip border and improve symmetry. The change is visible straight away.

With age, lips lose volume, the border fades and fine lines appear above the upper lip; some people simply have naturally thin or uneven lips. Lip filler can improve both the lips and the balance of the lower face.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body already makes; it binds water and keeps tissues plump. Lip fillers are soft enough to move naturally as you talk and smile, and they can be dissolved with a special enzyme if needed, so the treatment is reversible.

Good lip filler is about more than size: shape depends on the upper-to-lower lip ratio, the border, the cupid’s bow and the corners of the mouth. Popular styles such as French lips, Hollywood lips or Russian lips are each created by planning these details differently.

How Is Lip Filler Done?

Your consultation starts with an assessment of your lips and facial proportions. In Dr. Sevgi Ekiyor’s Facial Architecture (Yüz Mimarisi®) approach, the lips are never planned in isolation; if the face is out of balance, that is addressed first. Lip filler in Istanbul is therefore often planned alongside other facial fillers.

  1. A numbing cream is applied to the lips for 15–20 minutes. For people who are more sensitive, a small local anesthetic injection inside the mouth may also be used.
  2. You keep your lips slightly parted, and the treatment is done in this position.
  3. Depending on the shape you are aiming for, the filler is placed with a very fine needle or a cannula, starting from the edges or the center.
  4. Placement is checked by touch; any small clusters are gently massaged smooth.
  5. You are asked to talk, smile and pucker so the lips can be checked in motion and for symmetry.

The appointment takes about 20–30 minutes. Early swelling makes the lips look fuller at first; the final shape appears at around 10 days, when your follow-up visit is planned.

Lip Filler Swelling and Aftercare

Swelling is expected. Because hyaluronic acid draws in water, the lips are usually most swollen the morning after treatment; swelling eases during the day, and mild puffiness on waking for the first few days is normal.

To help swelling settle faster:

  • Apply ice to the lips before bed and when you wake up.
  • For the first 1–2 days, let drinks and food cool to lukewarm.
  • Avoid salty food and alcohol for a few days.
  • Avoid kissing or pressing on the lips for 3 days.
  • Stay away from saunas, steam rooms and very hot environments for 10 days.
  • Do not apply any product to the lips for the first 24 hours; after that, use the lip balm your doctor recommends if your lips feel dry.

Swelling that returns in the afternoon after easing in the morning, or marked redness and warmth, is different: it is rare but may signal a reaction to the filler, so contact your doctor without delay.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last?

Lip filler usually lasts 6–12 months. The lips are one of the most mobile areas of the face, so filler breaks down faster here than in quieter areas such as the chin and jawline.

How long your result lasts depends on:

  • The product used: Its density and structure affect duration.
  • Your metabolism: Filler may break down sooner in people with a fast metabolism.
  • Lifestyle: Smoking, strong sun, frequent sauna use and intense exercise can shorten the effect.

With regular top-ups, a similar result can often be kept with less product. Once the filler has fully dissolved, your lips return to how they looked before.

Lip Filler Side Effects

Done by a doctor with a licensed product, lip filler is considered safe, but as with any injection, side effects can occur:

  • Swelling and bruising: The most common effects; they fade within a few days.
  • Asymmetry: Temporary unevenness from swelling is normal. Any difference that remains is corrected at the follow-up visit.
  • Small lumps (nodules): These can form if product gathers in one spot and can usually be massaged out or, if needed, corrected with filler dissolving.
  • Cold sore flare-ups: In people prone to cold sores, injections can trigger one; your doctor may suggest preventive treatment.
  • Infection or blocked blood vessel: Rare, but they need prompt treatment.

Natural-looking lips depend on accurate placement as much as on the amount of product; balanced lips stay symmetrical and parallel when you make a “shh” gesture.

How long does lip filler take to settle?

Lip filler settles and takes its final shape in about 10 days. Some areas may look more swollen at first, so the result is assessed at the day-10 follow-up.

It depends on your lips and the look you want. For a natural result, 1 ml is enough for most people at the first session. If more volume is wanted, an extra session is planned once the first filler has settled.

In the Russian lip technique, filler is injected from points perpendicular to the lip border so the lips are lifted upward rather than pushed forward. This creates a flatter profile and a more defined cupid’s bow. Whether it suits your lip shape is decided at your consultation, which you can book through our contact page.

No. Lip filler is a non-surgical injectable treatment with no incisions, taking about 20–30 minutes. It is still a medical procedure, so it should be done by a doctor with a licensed product, and the hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if needed.

Lip filler is not done while there is an active cold sore or infection on the lips, or in people with a known allergy to the filler’s ingredients. It is also postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Your doctor will review your medical history before treatment.
