What Is Exosome Treatment?

Exosome treatment is the application of products containing exosomes, obtained in the laboratory from specific cell cultures, to the skin or scalp. Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells that carry information between them. They can contain various biological molecules, such as proteins, growth factors, lipids and fragments of genetic material, and cells use them to send signals to one another.

Depending on the product, exosomes may come from human cell cultures or other biological sources, and a product’s source and content matter for safety. The aim is to support the skin’s own renewal processes. Exosomes contain no living cells, which sets them apart from stem cell applications.

The use of exosomes in aesthetic medicine is a new field, and their effectiveness is still being researched. Current evidence is limited and results vary from person to person, so exosome treatment should only be planned after an examination and with realistic expectations.

In Türkiye, exosome, stem cell and other cell- or tissue-derived applications are subject to Ministry of Health regulation. They are performed only by a physician, within the scope permitted by the regulations and with the required licenses and approvals.

What Are Exosomes for Skin Used For?

Exosomes for skin are usually considered as one part of a plan to support skin quality, for example:

  • Skin quality: the aim is to support renewal in signs of aging such as dehydration, dullness and fine lines.
  • Uneven tone: they may be used alongside other treatments for sun-related spots and tone differences.
  • After scar treatment: they may be intended to support the skin’s recovery after acne scar or other scar treatments.
  • Sensitive, dry skin: they may be considered as a supportive option when the skin barrier is weakened.
  • Scalp: for hair loss and thinning, they may be considered alongside other treatments once the cause has been investigated.

If the doctor considers it appropriate, it may be planned alongside skin renewal treatments such as golden needle treatment or BBL laser; this is not necessary for everyone.

Exosomes do not fill wrinkles or restore volume; deep lines, sagging or volume loss need other methods.

How Is Exosome Treatment Done?

At our clinic in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, your skin, concerns, general health, medicines and allergies are reviewed first, and the method and session plan are tailored to you.

Stopping aspirin, high-dose omega-3 and vitamin E for a few days beforehand (after checking with your doctor) reduces bruising. Active acne, a cold sore or an open wound in the area means treatment is postponed.

  1. The area is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied if needed.
  2. The exosome product is delivered into the skin with very fine needles using the mesotherapy technique.
  3. Where appropriate, the product may be applied to the skin surface instead of being injected.
  4. The area is cleaned at the end and aftercare advice is given.

The doctor chooses the method by goal and area. Only products with a known source that are permitted for use in Türkiye are used. Most people return to daily life shortly afterward.

Exosome Treatment Side Effects and Risks

Performed by a doctor with appropriate products, exosome treatment is generally well tolerated, but as with any injection, side effects may occur:

  • Local reactions: redness, mild swelling and small bruises, which usually settle within a few days.
  • Allergic reaction: rarely, an allergic response to the product’s ingredients.
  • Infection: infection at the injection points if sterile conditions are not followed.
  • Temporary sensitivity: the skin may be more sensitive to sun and external factors for a while.

The source, content and quality control of exosome products differ. Products of unclear origin may increase risks such as allergy and infection, and long-term safety data are still limited, so the treatment should be performed by a doctor who knows the product’s source and licensing status. If redness lasts longer than expected, or you notice increasing pain, warmth or discharge, contact your doctor without delay.

How Many Sessions Are Needed and How Long Does It Last?

The number and spacing of sessions are decided at the examination according to the goal and the condition of your skin. One session may be planned for some people, while for longer-standing concerns such as spots or scars, a program of several sessions 2–4 weeks apart may be preferred.

Exosome treatment is not permanent. Because skin aging continues, a repeat session every 6–12 months may be planned; how long any effect lasts varies from person to person.

The main factors that affect the outcome:

  • Starting condition of the skin: age, sun damage and the degree of the concern.
  • Lifestyle: smoking, sleep and eating habits.
  • Daily care: regular sunscreen and the skincare products your doctor recommends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Popular Questions

What is the difference between exosomes and stem cells?

Stem cell applications use living cells. Exosomes are signaling vesicles released by cells and contain no living cells. Which approach is appropriate is assessed at the examination, according to your needs and the scope permitted by the regulations.

Exosomes may be considered alongside other treatments to support the scalp in hair loss. Evidence in this area is still limited, and the cause of the hair loss should be investigated first.

For the first 24 hours, keep water off the treated area, avoid makeup and skip intense exercise that makes you sweat. In the following days, use a high-SPF sunscreen.

Because skin renewal takes time, any changes are usually noticed gradually over weeks and vary from person to person. The result is assessed at a follow-up once the planned sessions are complete.

It is not done for people undergoing active cancer treatment, people with an infection in the treatment area, people taking medicines that suppress the immune system, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. With a history of cancer, an autoimmune disease or a chronic illness, suitability is assessed separately at the examination.
