What Is Under Eye Mesotherapy?
Under eye mesotherapy is a treatment in which a blend made specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes is injected in tiny amounts with very fine needles. The blend usually contains hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids, peptides and ingredients that support circulation.
The skin around the eyes is much thinner than the rest of the face and has fewer oil glands. That is why aging, fatigue and environmental factors often show here first. Under-eye mesotherapy aims to improve hydration and elasticity in this thin skin, lighten a dark, shadowed look and soften fine lines. Because it works on skin quality, it is sometimes called an “under eye skin booster.”
It is not the same as an under-eye filler. A filler corrects a hollow by adding volume, while mesotherapy adds no volume and focuses on skin quality instead. If you also have a visible hollow, the two can be planned together; see our under-eye light filler page for details on tear trough filler.
Can Mesotherapy Help Dark Circles?
Under-eye concerns have different causes, and each may need a different approach, so no single dark circles treatment suits everyone. Under-eye mesotherapy is most often chosen for:
- Dark circles: Darkness caused by blood vessels and pigment showing through thin skin.
- Fine lines: Small wrinkles under the eyes and around the crow’s feet linked to loss of moisture.
- A dull, tired look: Loss of freshness from poor sleep, stress or long hours in front of a screen.
- Thin, less elastic skin: Under-eye skin that has thinned and lost collagen with age.
Genetics and skin tone play a role, but so does lifestyle. Long screen time, smoking, alcohol, too little sleep, not wearing glasses you need and not removing eye makeup properly can all make under-eye concerns worse.
Noticeable under-eye bags are usually caused by fat around the eye moving forward, and mesotherapy does not treat them. For bags, sagging and other concerns, see our dark circles, bags and discoloration treatment page.
How Is Under-Eye Mesotherapy Done?
First, the eye area is examined to understand what is causing the darkness, lines or hollowness. The blend and dose are then chosen for you, based on your skin structure, skin tone, the severity of the concern and your age.
For a few days beforehand, ask your doctor about stopping aspirin, high-dose omega-3 and vitamin E, as these can increase bruising.
- The eye area is cleansed with toner and any makeup is removed.
- A numbing cream is applied and left for about 20 minutes.
- Using the pupil as a reference point, the injection points are marked with an erasable pen.
- Small amounts of the blend are injected at each point with very fine needles.
- The area is cleaned, and a cold compress is applied if needed.
The procedure takes about 15–20 minutes. Small bumps and mild redness may appear at the injection points and usually fade within a few hours. Because the eye area has many blood vessels, some people get small bruises. Under-eye mesotherapy can be done in the same session as face mesotherapy.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
Under-eye mesotherapy is usually planned as a course of 3–5 sessions, 2–3 weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on the cause and severity of your concern and is decided at your consultation.
Changes in hydration and freshness are often noticed after the first few sessions. Improvement in darkness and fine lines develops more slowly and becomes clearer in the weeks after the course ends. When dark circles are mainly genetic, results may be more limited, and this is discussed openly at your consultation.
The treatment can be done at any time of year. In summer, protecting the eye area from the sun and wearing sunglasses helps keep darkness from getting worse.
Under-Eye Mesotherapy or Tear Trough Filler?
The right choice depends on what is causing the problem:
- If darkness, fine lines and dehydrated skin are the main concern: Under-eye mesotherapy is the first option for improving skin quality.
- If there is a clear hollow and shadow: A tear trough filler is preferred to restore volume. A shadow from a hollow can look like a dark circle, and mesotherapy alone will not be enough.
- If you have both: Volume is usually restored with filler first, then skin quality is supported with mesotherapy.
The eye area shapes how the whole face looks. In Dr. Sevgi Ekiyor’s Facial Architecture (Yüz Mimarisi®) approach, the under-eye area is assessed together with the cheekbones and midface, because volume loss in the midface can make an under-eye hollow look deeper.
