What Is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a collagen-stimulating treatment, or biostimulator, containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). It gradually supports your skin’s own collagen production. Unlike classic fillers, it doesn’t add volume straight away; its effect builds slowly over weeks and months as new collagen forms.

Poly-L-lactic acid is biocompatible and gradually absorbed by the body. Sculptra comes as a powder and is mixed with sterile water before treatment. Once placed in the deeper layers of the skin, the particles stimulate your body’s collagen production.

With age, the face loses not just volume but also the support structure that holds the tissue up. Sculptra doesn’t aim to fill a single area; it aims to strengthen overall facial support and skin firmness over time. The result is usually described as a rested, fuller look rather than a “done” one.

What Areas Can Sculptra Treat?

Sculptra is used where the face has widespread volume loss:

  • Temples: To support hollow-looking temples.
  • Cheeks and cheekbones: To gradually restore lost mid-face fullness.
  • Sides of the face and around the jawline: To support tissue that has started to loosen.

Good candidates usually have widespread volume loss and thinning, skin that has started to lose elasticity, and a preference for results that build naturally over time. If you want quick volume in one area, hyaluronic acid fillers such as temple filler or facial filler may be more suitable.

Sculptra is not used in the lips or around the eyes. When sagging is marked, it may not be enough on its own and can be combined with a non-surgical facelift approach. Which method suits you is decided at your consultation.

How Is Sculptra Done, and How Many Sessions?

Treatment starts with a detailed facial analysis. Your doctor assesses how widespread the volume loss is and plans the treatment areas.

  1. The product is mixed with sterile water before treatment.
  2. The area is cleansed and an anesthetic cream is applied for a short time.
  3. Sculptra is spread evenly in the deeper layers of the skin with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula.
  4. The doctor massages the area at the end of treatment.

Treatment takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and most people return to their daily routine the same day. Because collagen takes time to build, usually 2 to 3 sessions are planned a few weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on how much volume has been lost and is decided at consultation.

The fullness you see right after treatment comes from the water and fades within a few days. This is normal; the real result comes as collagen forms.

Sculptra Aftercare: The 5-5-5 Rule and Side Effects

Massage is the most important part of Sculptra aftercare. To help the product spread evenly and prevent small lumps, the 5-5-5 rule is usually recommended: gently massage the treated area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days. Your doctor will show you how after treatment.

Other recommendations:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise and makeup for 24 hours.
  • In the first days, a cold compress wrapped in a clean cloth can ease swelling.
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms and sunbeds for a few days.
  • Keep your follow-up appointments and planned sessions.

Mild swelling, redness, tenderness and small bruises can occur and usually pass within a few days. Rarely, small lumps you can feel under the skin (nodules) may form. Following the massage rule and having treatment with an experienced doctor reduce this risk. If you notice unexpected pain, discoloration or swelling that keeps getting worse, contact your doctor.

How Long Does Sculptra Last?

Sculptra is not a lasting treatment; poly-L-lactic acid is gradually absorbed by the body. The collagen it stimulates, however, stays in the tissue for some time. Results vary from person to person and can last up to around 2 years.

How long results are maintained depends on age, skin type, metabolism and lifestyle. Daily sunscreen, not smoking and avoiding rapid weight changes all help.

When will I see Sculptra results?

The initial fullness fades within a few days. The collagen effect starts within weeks and becomes clearer over months, so the result is assessed a few months after the final session.

Usually 2 to 3 sessions are planned a few weeks apart. People with more volume loss may need a different number. Your exact plan is decided at consultation after assessing your face.

No. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Sculptra cannot be dissolved with an enzyme; it is gradually absorbed by the body. That is why the dose and treatment areas are planned carefully.

Radiesse gives support and contour straight after treatment, with the collagen effect developing over the following months. With Sculptra, volume isn’t visible straight away; results build gradually and usually need several sessions. Which suits you depends on your facial structure and expectations.

It is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with an active infection, open wound or cold sore in the area. It is also not recommended for people allergic to its ingredients, people with autoimmune disease or on immunosuppressive treatment, or those prone to keloid scarring.
